The web is a wonderful thing. People can come together in communities, forums, etc. to share their thoughts and ideas about their particular area of interest. Occasionally I do a search for “liturgical musician”, “pastoral musician”, “liturgical music”, etc. looking for ideas, inspiration and support. To my amazement, much of what I find is very negative, close minded and even hateful. I don’t want to mention any web sites or organizations because I don’t want to sling mud or advertise their cause any further, but—they are easy to find.
In the eight years I’ve been a Catholic choir director, I’ve gotten to know many wonderful people involved in Catholic liturgical music. Musicians, singers, composers—we are a community who love being Catholic, love liturgy, and love music. Let’s celebrate the richness of the liturgy and the music that is available to us.
